Carabosse Shawl

A purple shawl with spikey edging hands against a cupboard door.

The second pattern in the Fairies in Literature collection; Carabosse is inspired by the evil fairy in Sleeping Beauty. She is one of those characters who feels like she needs a good back story, but the traditional versions of the tale are generally fairly quiet on Carabosse. She is a fairy, she is evil and/or angry, and curses the heroine of the story. More recent stage and screen adaptations have given her the back story she needs, but I have tried to put those aside.

I have taken the “evil” side of things and brought them into the shawl with the pointy lace and angular shawl shape. The yarn, a collaboration with Tami of Eternity Ranch Knits, was dyed specifically for the project and shows a wonderful darkness and complexity. On the fairy side, I’ve tried to keep things drapey and light, hence the larger needle size. The yarn ties in here well too, because we do tend to think of fairies as beautiful (even the evil ones) and the yarn is not only beautiful in its colours, but also the inclusion of Tencel in the base adds a gentle shine and contributes to the shawl’s drape and beauty.

The pattern has been test knit and professionally tech edited.
